Surfing season is on so grab your surfboard and head down south for some wave bashing! The south coast of Sri Lanka has always delivered some quality surf from Hikkaduwa to the far reaches of Mirissa with the best waves coming in from November to April. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just testing the waters, the south coast has a number of spots with perfect breaks for any level, as well as plenty of local surfers who offer surfing lessons and a few insider tips (if you ask nicely!).
Surfing accommodation is well represented in the south, varying from budget backpacker lodges to sweet spots like Cantaloupe Aqua, trendy Galle hotels and everything else in between. Surfers would be best served to select their accommodation based on their level of skill to get the most out of the waves. Places like Galle and Weligama are perfect for beginners with Midigama and Ahungama throwing a bit a of challenging – they’re also popular locations for serious surfers who prefer to stay away from the commercial areas.
