Thailand’s traditional New Year Festival

Thai New Year Celebrated This Month – Songkran Held with Certain Restrictions

Songkran, the name of Thailand’s traditional New Year Festival, took place this year with certain restrictions and social distancing rules in place in-line with COVID-19 guidelines. The government officially declared 10th to 15th April 2021 as the festival period and the event was awaited with much expectation after last year’s festivities were cancelled due to the global pandemic.

Among the hotspots for experiencing Songkran was the Thai capital, notably Silom and Khao San Road within easy reach of properties like Maitria Residence Rama 9 Bangkok. For those who were based at such a centrally located service apartment, Bangkok New Year celebrations were easily witnessed. Known for its popular water fights that take place on the streets, this annual event is also a time of purification and family reunions which are two important aspects as well.
