The Thai Transport Ministry has announced an extensive plan to enhance the Bangkok Port in the Khlong Toei district, dispelling earlier speculations about its potential relocation. Instead of moving the port, the ministry aims to focus on vertical expansion to maximize the existing land use and optimize space for future developments. The plan reflects a strategic directive from Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, with the Office of the Council of State (OCS) and the National Economics and Social Development Council (NESDC) working closely with the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) to conduct feasibility studies. These studies will explore the construction of vertical residential projects for the local communities surrounding the port.
The development strategy also includes expanding commercial spaces to bolster the logistics industry while minimizing environmental impact. Planned enhancements comprise mixed-use and office buildings, along with facilities for large cruise ships to promote tourism and other attractive things to do around Bangkok and strengthen the port’s role as a significant logistics hub along the Chao Phraya River. These measures will also attract a significant number of visitors for hotels and places of accommodation in th area such as Avani+ Riverside Bangkok Hotel. The comprehensive master plan by PAT envisions an investment exceeding 100 billion baht, covering five distinct zones: administrative areas, a “smart port,” a cruise terminal with associated commercial spaces, a sports complex with a public park, and future development areas for e-commerce and additional logistics activities.
