Thailand and Australia are in discussions to waive visa requirements for their citizens, facilitating visa-free travel for specific periods. The proposal emerged during a meeting between Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and Australian Governor-General David Hurley in April, signalling a move towards closer tourism and economic ties. PM Srettha highlighted Thailand’s appeal for health-oriented travel, with its quality healthcare facilities and affordable medical services, making it a desirable destination for medical tourism. In return, Governor-General Hurley proposed increased cooperation on the Thailand-Australia Free Trade Agreement (Tafta) and potential collaborations in green energy and smart technology.
This potential agreement is expected to bolster Thailand’s tourism sector, which saw a significant drop in visitor numbers due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Travellers from Australia, known for their interest in wellness retreats in Australia the likes of Elysia Wellness Retreat, may find new opportunities to explore Thailand’s diverse cultural and wellness offerings.
