Sri Lanka Grants Approval to Import 1,000 Vehicles for Tourism Industry – Revitalizing a Key Pillar of the Nation’s Economic Growth

Sri Lanka’s Cabinet of Ministers has authorized the import of 1,000 vehicles to enhance transportation services within the tourism sector. This initiative targets a critical gap in modern and reliable tourist vehicles, aiming to elevate the overall visitor experience.

The import allowance consists of 750 vans and 250 buses, catering to diverse travel needs. The government aims to address the current reliance on an ageing fleet, replacing them with vehicles that better reflect Sri Lanka’s tourism image. The move could also potentially benefit hotels in Sri Lanka located in destinations without easy access to airports or public transportation services. Meanwhile, it should be noted that properties spearheaded by internationally acclaimed hospitality chains such as Aitken Spence Hotels provide or organise convenient and reliable transport options for excursions making it easier to explore the island.

While the import process won’t include special tax concessions, it follows the recent easing of vehicle import restrictions implemented earlier in 2024. This move signifies the government’s commitment to revitalizing Sri Lanka’s tourism industry, a key pillar of the nation’s economic growth.
