Thailand Biennale returns with a 3rd edition – Chiang Rai comes alive with art

The highly anticipated Thailand Biennale is set to make its mark in Chiang Rai, the northernmost region of Thailand, for its third edition in December 2023. The initiative, launched by the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture, Thailand’s Ministry of Culture, first graced Krabi in 2018 and later Korat in 2021. By rotating through diverse provinces, the Thailand Biennale strives to decentralize artistic activities, emphasize site specificity, and breathe life into local historical treasures.

Under the artistic direction of Rirkrit Tiravanija and Gridthiya Gaweewong, and curated by Angkrit Ajchariyasophon and Manuporn Luengaram, the event is titled “The Open World.” Drawing inspiration from the Buddha image at Wat Pa Sak in Chiang Rai, the theme symbolizes wisdom and awakening. It reflects the moment when Lord Buddha, descending from Tavatimsa Heaven, opens the three worlds—god, underworld, and human—revealing them to each other through a miraculous act. The Thailand Biennale continues to be a dynamic platform, melding contemporary art with rich cultural heritage. For those planning holidays at Chiang Rai hotels in December, try stopping by this event to learn more about Thailand’s artistry and culture. if you are unsure about how to get to the event, the staff at hotels like Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort can help you with more information.
