Thailand to implement a minor tourist tax

Thailand will be implementing a tourist fee beginning on June 1st, costing either 150 or 300 baht (4-8 USD) depending on the mode of transportation used to enter the country. The fee was approved by Thailand’s cabinet and will be used to cover expenses related to taking care of tourists. Tourists arriving by air will have to pay 300 baht while those arriving by land or water will have to pay 150 baht. The tax will be included in the price of airfare and the government expects to collect about 3.9 billion baht this year, which will be used for health and accident insurance for tourists as well as developing local tourist attractions.

The tourist fee has been under consideration for several years and was initially expected to go into effect last year. Thailand currently welcomes international travellers without any pandemic-related entry requirements, including those from the United States.
