Amongst the premier events in the IRONMAN circuit calendar, the Cairns Airport IRONMAN Asia-Pacific Championship Cairns took place this month in Tropical North Queensland, attracting a diverse field of competitors. Held on 12th June 2022, it featured several locations in and around Cairns, also encompassing nearby Port Douglas; family resort options here including properties like Oaks Port Douglas Resort provided an ideal base for those who wanted to go catch some of the race-day action.
The event is fondly referred to as the “Race in Paradise” due to the breathtaking natural setting of a region home to the Daintree Rainforest and Great Barrier Reef. The challenging course consisted of a 3.8 km swim from Palm Cove, a 180 km bike course along the Captain Cook Highway to Port Douglas and a 42.2 km run at the Cairns Esplanade. There were some festival events during this time too including the COUCH Charity Fun Run, Quicksilver Green Island Reef Swim and IRONKIDS Cairns.
