The Hindu Festival Deepavali – The Festival of Light 2020

Deepavali is a festival celebrated by Hindus in Sri Lanka and other countries that have a general population of Hindu practitioners. It is a one-day public holiday in Sri Lanka where light is given prominence by Hindus – as Deepavali is the festival of light. In 2020, Deepavali fell on Saturday the 14th of November.

The festival itself covers five days. The date on the regular calendar is picked according to the first month of the Hindu year. This would mean sometime in October or November of the solar calendar of the West.

The legend of Deepavali is said to fall around the Hindu god Krishna who destroyed an evil tyrant by the name of Narakasura in a battle. Travel to Sri Lanka during this time does not undergo significant changes. But Hindus might return home to their families. Those interested can learn more about Sri Lankan holidays by visiting sites like Truly Sri Lanka.
