The Hindu Festival of Deepavali in Sri Lanka

Annual Event Falls Next Month

The annual festival of Deepavali will take place next month in Sri Lanka and is amongst the main religious events observed by Hindu devotees across the world. This festival celebrates the triumph of good over evil as well as light over darkness; lasting for five days, the main day falls on the darkest night of the new moon in the lunisolar month called “Kartik” which is generally in October or November.

This year, Deepavali is on 14th November 2020 and you can witness festivities and customs at homes as well as kovils across the island which are lit up during this time. Those staying at luxury beach hotels in Pasikuda can look to visit such Hindu temples in the region; these include the Mari Amma and Sri Munai Murukan kovils within easy reach of properties like Uga Bay by Uga Escapes. During this time, it is also customary for devotees to light fireworks and share food and gifts with family and friends.
