The tradition of the Kandy Esala Perahera is primarily performed to honour the most sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha. The festival features dancers in traditional attire, jugglers, fire breathers, musicians and a majestically decorated elephant that carries the sacred tooth in a golden casing. The festivities of the Esala Perahera can be witnessed for over a week as the processions are carried out for a period of ten days.
