The Maldives Observes Republic Day – Commemorating A Key Chapter in the Nation’s History

On 11th November this year, the Maldives observed its annual Republic Day which commemorates the nation’s transition to a republic from a monarchy. Interestingly, the country which was earlier governed by a sultan became a British Empire protectorate in 1887. Later, following the death of the then-sultan and his son, the nation briefly became a republic in 1953, though the monarchy was subsequently restored in 1954. A key turning point came in 1965 when the Maldives became fully independent and no longer a protectorate of the British Empire. After a parliamentary vote followed by a referendum in 1968, the country chose to establish a republic yet again which was proclaimed on 11th November in the same year.

On Republic Day, the Maldives hosts various events and celebrations across the country. These include parades featuring military personnel, a marching band or school children, flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural performances, official speeches and more.
