The Maldives Targets Two Million Tourists in 2023 – Arrivals This Year Already Exceed 2021

Speaking at the 55th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank in September 2022, the Tourism Minister of the Maldives, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom, stated that the country was looking to welcome two million tourists in 2023. The Maldives remains one of the most remarkable tourism success stories following the pandemic and is on track to meet its goal for 2022 which is to record 1.6 million tourists. Amongst the reasons for increasing the target next year is due to the anticipation of arrivals from China for the first time since the pandemic struck.

This year has already been a success for the local tourism industry which is celebrating its 50th anniversary and the figures speak for themselves. By 2nd November 2022, the country had recorded 1,354,828 tourists for the year which was more than the total number for 2021; at the time, there was an annual increase in arrivals by 32.5% when compared with the same period last year in the Maldives. 5 star resorts on private islands continue to be a big draw with properties like The Residence Maldives offering safe stays for families, couples, and independent travellers alike.
