The Maldives to celebrate 54th Republic Day

On the 11th of November 2022, The Republic of Maldives commemorates their 54th Republic Day. The Maldives joined the British Empire as a protectorate on December 16, 1887. The Maldives gained their independence in July 1965 after the British Ambassador and Maldivian Prime Minister signed an accord ending British responsibility for the country’s defence and foreign policy. The Maldives’ parliament approved the transition from a constitutional monarchy to a republic in November 1967. On March 15, 1968, a referendum was held, and more than 80% of participants decided in favour of establishing a republic. On November 11th, 1968, the Maldives’ second republic was declared.

This day is celebrated all over the beautiful archipelago, which is now famous for being a tourist paradise. Many Maldives 5-star resorts on private islands such as Amaya Kuda Rah are popular among travellers from all corners of the world.
