‘Esala’ also known as the month of August marks the beginning of the raining season. The Esala Perahera in Kandy is organized to venerate the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha. It was commenced on 12th August 2018 and the city of Kandy enchanted the visitors who milled around the streets to view this eye-catching ceremony. The thrashing of whips indicated the commencement of the perahera while the rhythmical throb of drums, stunning performances of Kandyan dancers and beautifully dressed-up elephants awakened the spirits of tourists who came to witness the perahera. Those who based themselves at many Kandy hotels the likes of Cinnamon Citadel Kandy were able to witness a multitude of eye-catching performances and fireworks that lit up the entire city. Numerous torchbearers on either side of the streets were a significant highlight which added more colour to this fascinating pageant.
