The National Day of the Maldives 2020

Commemorating the Fight for Freedom

Held in October, the National Day of the Maldives commemorates a victorious struggle in which Portuguese invaders were successfully defeated in the 16th century. Known as “Qaumee Dhuvas” in the local language, this day is celebrated annually and falls on the first day of Rabi-ul-Awwal, which according to the Islamic calendar, is the third month. This year, the day fell on 18th October; typically, the National Day is marked by flag-raising ceremonies, military parades and various stage performances.

Such events can be usually seen at places like Male, the capital of the Maldives; resort options within easy reach of this island include properties such as Kurumba Maldives. Amongst the national heroes remembered at this time are Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam who along with his brothers and fellow patriots battled the Portuguese till they were driven out from Male in 1573.
