The Phuket Vegetarian Festival Reaches New Levels of Ritualised Body Piercing

Carried out as an act of piety, the body piercings of devotees at the Phuket Vegetarian Festival has reached new levels of daring and bearing of pain by those engaged in such practices. The festival which commenced in October and ran up to November 1st, sees the participation of the Chinese community who not only abstain from eating meat, but also engage in various acts such as body piercing and fire-walking. Such rituals can be seen in Chinese temples around the island including those in Phuket Town and visitors in search of aPhuket beach resort from which to head to such sites, can consider staying at Anantara Phuket Villas. A sight not for the faint hearted, these ritual practices involve a variety of piercings with 2014 showcasing even more acts of piety as devotees use everything from knives to razor blades to pierce themselves.
