The Prime Minister of India Narendra Singh Modi visited the Maldives and Sri Lanka on the 8thand the 9th of June 2019. His external affairs ministry said the purpose of his visit was to strengthen neighbourhood connections and continue to prioritise it during his second term in office.
Modi’s visit to the Maldives was the first PM visit to the islands since 2011 that is a full-fledged bilateral visit. Relations between the two countries have solidified under the guidance of new President Ibrahim Solih.
Both sides held discussions on a series of topics from defence and security, cooperation in areas such as the luxury family resorts. Maldives requested aid in building a cricket stadium and developing the local cricket teams. Indian delegates that visit the Maldives would stay at one of the resorts like Amilla Fushi Maldives.
