The World’s First Floating City to Be Built in the Maldives – A Viable Sustainable Solution

As reported on the website of Condé Nast Traveller on 5th July 2022, the Maldives has greenlit a project that will see it constructing the first floating city in the world. This is seen as being a sustainable solution and an ideal option as the globe’s lowest-lying destination faces the threat of rising sea levels due to climate change. It’s located 15 minutes by boat from the capital, Male, from where travellers can also easily reach some of the best Maldives all-inclusive resorts including private island properties such as OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi. Expected to be completed around 2028, the Maldives Floating City will have 5,000 housing units which are connected as well as tethered to a lagoon spanning 500 acres.

The first floating housing block was transported to this lagoon location in August this year and was opened for public viewing so people could get an idea of what to expect. This project which is a partnership between the Maldivian government and Dutch Docklands will feature houses, restaurants, shops, hotels and more; while there won’t be any cars here, residents will be able to get around via boat, foot, bicycle as well as electric scooters and buggies.
