Thingyan Water Festival in April

Celebrating the New Year in Myanmar

Known as Thingyan, the traditional New Year in Myanmar will take place next month. This popular water festival will be held from 13th to 16th April 2022 and is usually characterised by much merriment and playful water fights across the country. That said, this year’s celebrations are bound to be different due to the pandemic and related restrictions.

Thingyan marks the end of the hot season in Myanmar and is also considered a time when people reflect on the year that was, put away past misgivings and get ready for a new start; this is symbolised through water which people splash on each other, while it is customary for Buddhists to make offerings at temples as well. Accommodation options in key cities including properties like Chatrium Hotel Royal Lake Yangon make an ideal base from which to observe or take part in this water festival; such a centrally located hotel Yangon has to offer is also close to the Sule Pagoda, which is generally one of the festival hotspots.
