Tourism Recovers in the Maldives as the Wealthy Take a Break from the Pandemic

Tourism has risen its head once more in the Maldives as the rich and wealthy have chosen its tropical landscapes to escape the pandemic blues. Some resorts have experienced a record number of occupancies as tourists tend to take a particular delight in ‘no-mask’ tropical escapes. Maldives luxury resorts such as the Residence Maldives Falhumaafushi opened for international travellers in July, last year, and many tourists have been flocking to these paradisiacal islands ever since. The welcome one would usually receive at holiday resorts has changed with the pandemic; where one was typically met with a beaming battalion of staff has now reduced to an anonymous staff member, who would then proceed to administer a PCR test.

By 17th February, 147,744 tourists were recorded since the turn of the year, kindling a new flame of hope for this industry on which the country heavily relies for its economy.
