US Oil Firm Wants Stability Assurances to Resume Operations in Mozambique – Potential economic benefits on hold due to insurgency

Having suspended its operations in 2020 due to local instability, the Mozambican arena of American gas company ExxonMobil is now seeking assurances of stability in the country before attempting any resuming of operations. Dependent on the government’s ability to provide a stable working environment (including adequate security) the decision to continue operating in Mozambique may potentially have an effect on local industry across the country, including the tourism sector.

Highlighting the possibility for thousands of jobs to be created due to ExxonMobil operations, the provision of such natural resources and internal revenue is debated to affect many Mozambique resorts, including but not limited to such properties as the Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort – as the insurgency has already resulted in the displacement of 700,000 people and a huge impact on the local economy.
