An encouraging sign for the local tourism sector, the US State Department downgraded its travel advisory level to Sri Lanka from a Level 3 to a Level 2. Following the tragic Easter terrorist bombings, many nations including the US imposed high travel advisory warnings to their citizens planning to visit the island. While the Level 2 travel advisory by the US does ask citizens to exercise increased caution, the previous Level 3 advised travellers to reconsider their trip to Sri Lanka.

This easing of the travel advisory level which came into effect from 24th June 2019 comes in the wake of other countries such as the United Kingdom also downgrading their travel advisories. At present, tourists have the option of staying at popular destinations like Galle, Negombo and Kandy; best hotels in the island the likes of Amaya Hills Kandycontinue to encourage foreign visitors and it is hoped with the easing of such travel restrictions, tourist arrivals will begin to increase.
