USA Today Puts the Spotlight on Coral Reefs in Maldives – A Call for Vital Conservation
This April, the USA Today news website highlighted the critical role coral reefs play in the Maldives, emphasising the urgent need for conservation efforts. Climate change and human activity pose a significant threat to these underwater ecosystems, prompting tropical paradises like the Maldives to take action.
Coral restoration initiatives, such as coral planting, are offering a beacon of hope. This relatively simple process involves attaching coral fragments to metal frames and placing them in safe, shallow areas. Within a few months, these fragments can regenerate, transforming barren patches into thriving coral communities. As the coral flourishes, it provides a vital habitat for fish, creating a self-sustaining underwater environment. The article also acknowledged the crucial role Maldives resorts play in protecting coral reefs, particularly given tourism’s status as the nation’s primary industry.
An example of this can be seen at Green Globe-certified resorts such as OBLU SELECT Sangeli which launched a successful reef conservation programme in 2019. Their initiative focused on rebuilding coral cover through the creation of coral nurseries using the previously mentioned frame method. Over 7,000 coral fragments were placed on frames and positioned in two locations around the island of this beach resort in Maldives. The thriving coral nursery has transformed the lagoon bed, now teeming with fish and other marine life, all visible through snorkelling adventures. This success story serves as a powerful example of the positive impact achievable through collective conservation efforts.
