Utheemu to Host National Day Celebrations: A New Chapter in Maldives’ Heritage Revival
Honouring the past, shaping the future — Utheemu takes centre stage.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Maldives’ National Day celebrations will officially be held in Utheemu this year and next, marking a renewed national focus on the island’s historical significance. Known as the birthplace of the Utheemu brothers, who once resisted Portuguese rule, Utheemu is now at the heart of efforts to preserve Maldivian heritage.
During his North Thiladhunmathi Atoll tour, the President highlighted infrastructure developments already underway on the island, including a new Secretariat building, police station, and a Bank of Maldives ATM. He affirmed that Utheemu’s development will be prioritised alongside broader national progress.

This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to equality and identity renewal, set against the backdrop of the Maldives’ rising global appeal. From cultural heritage to tropical escapes like OBLU SELECT Sangeli Maldives, a renowned and elegant Maldives luxury resort, the country continues to honour tradition while embracing transformation—making it a destination rich in legacy and promise.
