Vesak Day 2024: A Cultural Celebration
Though celebrated by many nations, Vesak’s official declaration as a Buddhist holy day occurred in 1950 during the World Fellowship of Buddhists’ meeting in Sri Lanka. Often called “Buddha Day” for its encompassing nature, Vesak commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha.
Variations in observance arise from Buddhism’s adaptation to different cultures. This text focuses specifically on Sri Lankan traditions. Here, the government enforces closures of liquor stores and slaughterhouses, prohibiting the sale and purchase of alcohol and fresh meat. While the two main days fall on the first full moon, celebrations extend throughout the following week. Illuminated displays called “thorns” recount stories from the Jataka Tales, while colourful lanterns adorn streets and homes. Additionally, free food stalls and devotional singing groups chanting “bhakti gee” hymns become commonplace. Devotees, often clad in white, visit temples, offering flowers and incense. Special teachings by monks, all-day temple stays for rededication, and Buddhist flag displays further mark this significant event. Visitors that are here during this important period can stay at the best hotels in Sri Lanka, properties such as that of Amagi Hotels, from where they can launch their explorations.
