As a public holiday that is marked annually in the paradise archipelago Victory Day took centre stage in the Maldivian calendar once again this November 3rd. Marking the anniversary of the coup that took place nearly 28 years ago the country’s victory over the Sri Lankan perpetrators was a historic day in the country’s recent memory. Revered as a beach holiday hub home to countless Maldives luxury resort islands and hospitality hubs the likes of PER AQUUM Huvafen Fushi Maldives it is not often that the Maldives makes headlines due to political upheaval or volatility.
But November 3rd of 1988 saw a group of Sri Lankan born terrorists unsuccessfully attempt to overthrow the rule of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. The coup with Abdullah Luthufi as its ring leader involved no less than 80 mercenaries from the neighbouring nation. The president’s appeal for help was heeded by the government of India which provided air and naval forces and thus strengthened relations between the two countries.
