Visa-free entry to boost tourism in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka’s tourism sector is experiencing a remarkable surge, fueled by a strategic visa-free travel initiative and enhanced digital payment infrastructure. With visa-free entry for tourists from key countries like China, India, and Russia, Sri Lanka has become a top destination choice. The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, coupled with the visa-free scheme, has streamlined entry procedures, attracting over 208,000 visitors in January alone, marking a significant YoY increase. Leading the influx are tourists from Russia and India, contributing to a potential milestone of 2 million visitors in 2024, with an estimated revenue of USD 6 billion.
Avanthi Colombage, Country Manager for Visa in Sri Lanka, emphasizes the pivotal role of digital payments in boosting tourism and fostering a seamless travel experience. With travellers increasingly seeking experiential journeys, Sri Lanka’s focus on digital payment options aligns with global travel trends. By broadening payment acceptance across various sectors, from small businesses to large merchants, Kalutara hotels such as the famous Turyaa Kalutara, Sri Lanka aims to provide tourists with convenient and secure payment solutions, enhancing the overall tourism experience and reinforcing its position as a preferred travel destination.
