This month marked the beginning of the whale watching season in Sri Lanka’s east coast especially at destinations such as Trincomalee. While some tour operators begin excursions in March, others commence late in May; nevertheless, those staying at a resort in Trincomalee in the upcoming months including properties the likes of Jungle Beach by Uga Escapes can look to spot whales out at sea.

Whale watching in Trincomalee gives one a chance to see majestic blue whales as well as sperm whales and Bryde’s whales. Apart from whales, dolphins can also be spotted on these excursions; these include spinner, Risso’s, striped and bottlenose dolphins. During this time, a large number of local and foreign travellers are expected to visit the east coast in order to see these majestic marine mammals.
