Wreck-Diving Tourist Destination – East Coast Discoveries of Wonder

The East Coast of Sri Lanka maybe known for its idyllic beaches, but this coastal getaway is also fast becoming a hotspot for divers looking to explore sunken wrecks. This fact was highlighted in the recent discovery of a wreckage of an aircraft found near Kalkudah. In fact Kalkudah and nearby Pasikuda are popular places to begin diving expeditions and travellers staying at Sri Lanka beach hotels in the area such as Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa have ample opportunity to head off on underwater excursions.

This latest find was made by local diver, Dharshana Jayawardena who has also been credited for identifying the British wreck SS Worcestershire off Mount Lavinia’s coast. According to Mr. Jayawardena this new wreck is a Consolidated Catalina PBY-5A amphibious plane originating from America and dating back to World War Two. The current wreck includes wings, propellers and radial engines.
