Balancing heritage, innovation, and high-value travel for a resilient island future
Zanzibar is advancing a high-value, low-impact tourism agenda, according to Tourism Minister Mudrick Ramadhan Soragha, with a focus on sustainability, cultural preservation, and international partnerships.
GCC markets, particularly the UAE and Saudi Arabia, are emerging as key growth drivers, alongside rising demand for curated beach and heritage experiences. The government is strengthening eco-regulations, upgrading marine protection, and promoting community-based tourism to safeguard Swahili identity.
Digital transformation, improved air connectivity, and simplified entry processes are also being prioritised to enhance competitiveness. Investments in infrastructure, including airport upgrades and hospitality training, aim to support long-term sector growth.
The island continues to attract premium travellers seeking authentic coastal escapes, with developments ranging from boutique stays to established resorts such as The Residence Zanzibar, alongside other leading Zanzibar luxury hotels. Officials say these efforts aim to position the destination as a leading sustainable island economy in the Indian Ocean over the coming years through coordinated reform initiatives planned.
