25,000 Visitors Recorded in the First Four Days of 2024: Huge Boost for Sri Lanka

In the first four days of the new year, Sri Lanka has witnessed a robust influx of tourists, with a remarkable 25,619 arrivals, as reported by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA). Following a difficult period in the country, this is seen as a welcome boost that is a step in the path to bringing the industry to its previous heights.

Notably, Russian nationals constituted a significant portion, totalling 5,060, alongside 3,333 Indian nationals. The diversity of visitors extended beyond Russians and Indians to include Germans, Americans, British, Australians, Chinese, French, and the Dutch. The peak day for arrivals was January 3rd, with an impressive 7,251 tourists entering the country. Sri Lanka’s early 2023 performance indicates a promising start, approaching a quarter of the total arrivals for the same period last year. Particularly noteworthy is the contribution of 5,060 Russian tourists, constituting nearly 20% of the total arrivals. Despite narrowly missing the 1.5 million target in 2023, the SLTDA aims for an optimistic projection of 2.3 million tourist arrivals in the current year. Visitors have always found solace in the coastal regions of Sri Lanka, and have been seen taking up accommodation at private villas in Galle in properties such as Kahanda Kanda.
