Women’s Union Establishment Day in Lao in 2024 – Celebrating the Role and Rights of Lao Women
Lao Women’s Union Establishment Day, observed on July 20th each year, marks the founding of the Lao Women’s Union (LWU) in 1955. This significant day is a public holiday for all female civil servants, government staff, and other female employees. The LWU was established to promote women’s roles under the National Constitution and protect the rights and interests of Lao women and children. The union focuses on gender equality and the advancement of women in national socio-economic development, making it a pivotal organisation in Laos with over 600,000 members.
In 2024, as women across Laos celebrate this important day, many may choose to explore cultural and scenic attractions with the help of a Luang Prabang river cruise offered by popular cruise lines such as Mekong Kingdoms, offering a serene experience along the Mekong River. The LWU continues to mobilise and educate women of all ethnic groups, contributing to the protection and promotion of Lao customs and traditions. The holiday is an opportunity to recognise and honour the significant contributions of women to Lao society.
