Sri Lanka Sees Surge in Global Travel Interest as International Demand Grows – The island nation shines
Sri Lanka is rapidly becoming a favoured destination for international travellers, with a significant increase in Google searches for accommodations at Sri Lanka luxury resorts, according to Joanna Ong, a U.S.-based Google Travel Ad Specialist. Speaking at the ‘EME Level Up – Digital Hospitality Conclave’ organised by eMarketingEye, Ong highlighted that Sri Lanka and the Maldives are among the top countries benefiting from the global resurgence in travel and hospitality. She noted that search interest for places to visit and stay in Sri Lanka the likes of Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort is recovering and significantly exceeding pre-pandemic levels. “Demand for Sri Lanka and the Maldives is growing on Google, with searches for accommodation in 2024 well above 2019 levels,” Ong stated, emphasising consistent positive growth in both international and domestic travel trends over the past three years.
Ong also pointed out that post-pandemic travellers, having endured a long break due to COVID-19, are increasingly dedicating time online to meticulously plan their trips. This shift presents a valuable opportunity for destinations like Sri Lanka to engage potential visitors actively. The evolution of loyalty in the travel sector offers travel brands a chance to innovate and attract new markets. “The modern traveller spends an average of eight to nine hours online daily and interacts with over 140 touchpoints when researching new brands. This presents a significant opportunity for brands to strategically reach out and gain consideration,” Ong added. She also noted that younger travellers, particularly in emerging markets, are open to forming new relationships with brands that meet their expectations for seamless, personalized, and high-quality experiences, making competition for customer attention more dynamic than ever.
