Sri Lanka Sets Sights on 3 Million Tourists in 2026 to Aid Cyclone Recovery

Tourism fuels resilience – Sri Lanka’s journey from recovery to revival

Sri Lanka aims to welcome 3 million tourists this year, a notable increase from last year’s record 2.36 million arrivals, as the nation works to recover from Cyclone Ditwah. The devastating storm in November 2025 left hundreds of landslides, damaged over 110,000 homes, and caused major infrastructure losses, with estimated damages of $4.1 billion.

Tourism remains a critical pillar of the economy, generating $3.2 billion in revenue in 2025. Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism Vijitha Herath expressed optimism that increased visitor numbers would aid economic recovery while supporting local communities.

Investors are also showing interest, with the sector targeting $500 million in new investments this year. Visitors can enjoy historic attractions and places to visit in Polonnaruwa, while staying at top-rated properties such as Hotel Sudu Araliya, combining comfort with cultural exploration.
