UNESCO Spotlights Sigiriya in Global Heritage Travel Campaign

Sri Lanka’s ancient marvel continues to captivate the world stage

Sri Lanka’s famed Sigiriya has gained renewed international recognition after being highlighted in UNESCO’s latest “Travel Tuesday” campaign, which celebrates culturally and historically significant destinations across the globe. The feature places the ancient fortress among South Asia’s most treasured heritage landmarks while reinforcing the importance of preserving sites with deep historical value.

Towering nearly 180 metres above lush surroundings, the UNESCO World Heritage Site was once the royal stronghold of King Kassapa I during the 5th century. Renowned for its landscaped gardens, ancient frescoes, and striking lion-shaped gateway, the site continues to attract travellers, historians, and cultural enthusiasts alike.

Originally transformed into a Buddhist monastic complex after the king’s reign, Sigiriya remains one of the country’s most celebrated attractions today. Visitors exploring the region, including stays at a hotel in Sigiriya, Sri Lanka, such as the well-known Sigiriya Jungles Sri Lanka, continue to contribute to the destination’s growing global appeal.
