The Kandy Esala Perahera Festival 2026

Kandy Esala Perahera 2026 Set to Celebrate Sri Lanka’s Enduring Buddhist Heritage

A centuries-old tradition returns, uniting faith, culture, and timeless pageantry

The Kandy Esala Perahera 2026 is set to once again illuminate the streets of Kandy, celebrating one of Sri Lanka’s most treasured cultural and religious traditions. Held in honour of the Sacred Tooth Relic at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the annual procession reflects centuries of Buddhist devotion and historic customs.

The origins of the festival date back to the arrival of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Sri Lanka in 310 A.D., when it was brought by Princess Hemamala and Prince Dantha for safekeeping. Over time, the procession evolved through successive kingdoms before becoming an iconic event in Kandy, where it continues under the stewardship of the Diyawadana Nilame.

Today, the spectacular parade features traditional dancers, drummers, beautifully adorned elephants, and sacred rituals, attracting visitors from around the world. Guests staying at Kings Pavilion Kandy, a preferred and centrally-located luxury hotel in Kandy, can enjoy convenient access to this remarkable celebration of Sri Lanka’s rich spiritual and cultural legacy.
