Bali Bans Single-Use Plastics – Making Environmental Conservation a Priority

In a move that is seen as a key step in minimising the amount of plastic waste, the island of Bali recently banned single-use plastics which include straws, polystyrene and plastic bags. The first province in Indonesia to enforce such a law, this popular destination initially had a ban on single-use plastic bags at shopping centres, convenience stores and supermarkets. On 23rd June 2019 however, the ban came into effect across the island and covered traditional markets and modern retailers too.

It should be noted that certain Bali beach resorts had already put such plastic-related restrictions in place last year itself; examples include Anantara Uluwatu Bali Resort which halted the use of plastic drinking straws in 2018. It is hoped the current ban on single-use plastics will lead to significantly reducing the amount of plastic waste in Bali which has had a detrimental effect on the environment and tourism as well.
