The Maldives to introduce homestay tourism in January 2022 – Turning a new page

Intending to buttress the tourism industry, which took a massive hit from the pandemic, the Maldives government has decided to implement homestay tourism in the country. The tourism minister Abdulla Mausoom seems very keen on making the concept work, providing locals with a lifeline and tourists with a chance to experience local culture.

Meemu, Faafu, Dhaalu, Baa, Haa Alif, and Haa Dhaal Atoll will be the first contenders; these islands currently aren’t equipped with all-inclusive hotels in Maldives such as the Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa Maldives, which happen to be a popular choice among travellers. Since such options are not available on these islands, the islanders now have the opportunity to open their homes to tourists and make a living in return. According to the minister, the law to legalise homestay tourism will be passed soon enough, and all the regulations and requisites will have been implemented before the beginning of the new year.
