World Turtle Day – Conserving Marine Life
A day set aside for a marine species that is on the endangered list of world’s wildlife, World Turtle Day had special significance in countries such as the Maldives where one can find many turtle varieties. Celebrated each year on the 23rd of May, World Turtle Day brought into the spotlight the need for conserving these marine animals that are under threat due to reasons such as overfishing and the destruction of their nesting sites. The waters that surround the Maldives are home to 5 of the world’s 7 turtle species, namely the Olive Ridley, Green, Hawksbill, Leatherback and Loggerhead turtles. An ideal way to see this marine life-form would be to sign up for turtle snorkelling trips which are offered at a Maldives luxury hotel such as Cocoa Island by COMO, Maldives. Among the conservation steps that have been taken in the country include the education of local fishermen, the protection of nesting sites and the rehabilitation of turtles that have been injured.
