A Mock-Up of Maldives Floating City Being Prepared – A Novel & Sustainable Initiative

As mentioned on The Edition news website on 22nd February 2023, a mock-up of the planned floating city in the Maldives is going to be unveiled; one of the houses has been installed in the Hulhumale Lagoon and is bound to be a captivating sight for locals and tourists looking to gain insights into this novel and sustainable initiative. This project, a partnership between the Maldivian government and the Dutch Docklands Company, was launched in March 2021, while another agreement was signed in June 2022.

When complete, it will feature 5,000 floating units which will not only include houses but schools, shops and restaurants interlinked by canals. If development goes according to schedule, residents can start moving in during 2024, while the entire floating city should be completed by 2027. This eco-friendly project is seen as a viable solution to the issues faced by low-lying islands due to rising sea levels. Interestingly, in the Maldives, beach hotel properties have also adopted sustainable measures. This includes private island resorts like SAii Lagoon Maldives which have garnered Green Globe Certification with initiatives such as utilising renewable energy like solar power, making use of LED lighting and reducing water usage.
