Anantara Phuket Layan Resort & Spa Hosts Rare Turtle Release

Anantara Phuket Layan Resort & Spa, a renowned establishment among luxury hotels Phuket, once again, together with the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation, held its annual marine turtle release with the aim of ‘giving back to Nature’.

Sea turtles such as Green Turtles, Leatherbacks, Hawk Bills and Olive Ridley; play an important role in the marine eco-system but unfortunately they are recognized as endangered species due to reasons such as loss of nesting beach sites and human exploitation. Thus, Anantara Phuket Layan Resort & Spa has taken measures to protect these treasured species with the marine turtle release event that was held for the 2nd time on the 17th of March.

The event saw the release of 40 endangered marine turtles that had nested in the local area. The turtles return every November and February to lay their eggs, which are taken by the villagers to the Phuket Marine Biological Centre hatchery where the baby turtles are protected for a year to improve their chances of survival. It is after then that the grand turtle release event is held.
