Arrivals to the Maldives Record a Significant Rise – China Emerges as a Key Source Market

Foreign travellers visiting the Maldives have been on a steady rise this year, outpacing the figures of 2022. As per the statistics publicised by the Ministry of Tourism, as of 9th November 2023, the country had welcomed 1,561,197 tourists which was an increase of 12.8% when compared with the number for the same period last year. Another positive factor for the local tourism industry is that on average, travellers are staying seven days here. With more visitors expected for the holiday season, the country is also on track to achieve its year-end goal of 1.9 million tourist arrivals.

When it comes to the top source market so far this year, Russia continued to hold the top spot followed by India. Interestingly, China has also emerged as a notable contributor to the local tourism industry; it has steadily climbed up to take third place in the tourist arrival markets for the Maldives following the removal of travel restrictions this year by Chinese authorities. Such travellers are being drawn by the chance to enjoy getaways for families and couples as well as action on the waves when staying at a surf resort. Maldives offers such ideal holidays at private island properties like Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives where guests can enjoy the very best of this enchanting destination.
