Celebrating Geoffrey Bawa – Remembering a Pioneering Sri Lankan Architect

This year marks the 100th birthday of famed architected from Sir Lanka, Geoffrey Bawa who passed away in 2003. A recent online edition of Architectural Digest India looked back at the life of this inspirational architected who is known as the founder of the tropical modernist movement. Also highlighted were some of his celebrated creations that can be seen on a visit to the island be it while dining at a café or staying at a luxury villa Sri Lanka has to offer.

Among the notable architectural masterpieces mentioned were the Anantara Kalutara Resort on the south coast beside the Kalu Ganga (river), Paradise Road The Gallery Café in Colombo and the parliament building in Kotte. Each of these showcase elements that blend modernist architecture with a traditional local building style which are part of Geoffrey Bawa’s signature design.
