Chennai Airport goes green – Taking on Sustainable Initiatives!

The Chennai Airport announced in June that it is now fully operating on renewable energy. The airport has powered all its facilities utilising rooftop solar panels and solar energy bought from firms, as well as purchasing power from Tangedco under the green tariff. Consuming an average of 63,92,675 kWh per month, the airport has taken crucial steps to make the airport eco-friendly, with a switch to LED lights and efficiently using the air conditioning, it has cut down carbon emissions by 2200 tonnes.

The sustainable methods taken by the airport will surely please travellers who are environmentally conscious and could be seen as some of the first steps taken to make the entire tourism industry produce a smaller carbon footprint. Travellers will most likely want to follow suit and make their travels more sustainable by finding lodging at places within an hour of the airport, such as serviced apartments in OMR. Properties in Chennai such as Citadines OMR Chennai would suit these purposes with their sustainable models and close proximity to the airport.
