The Maldives entered into its first Free Trade Agreement with China on the 8th December 2017 during Abdulla Yameen, the Maldivian President’s four-day visit to Beijing. Furthermore, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed in addition to the Free Trade Agreement. Other Pacts signed during the visit will extend bilateral cooperation in a myriad of fields including tourism, technology, climate change and health. China stated that under the FTA, Maldives would minimize the tariffs of over 95% of the goods to zero.
