China Remains the Top Tourist Market for Maldives – Total Arrivals Show Significant Increase

The Maldives is experiencing a tourism bonanza, with China emerging as the top source market. While the year began with Italy leading the pack, Russia briefly held the top spot before China solidified its position, holding 12.6% of the market share with 55,641 arrivals as of 5th March 2024. This surge in Chinese visitors can be attributed to several factors including the launch of flights connecting China and the Maldives from Sichuan and Xiamen Airlines. These direct connections have made travel easier and more accessible, fostering increased interest from Chinese tourists.

By 5th March this year, the Maldives had welcomed an impressive 443,128 visitors which was a remarkable 15.9% increase in tourist arrivals compared to the same period in 2023. This positive trend bodes well as the country looks to achieve its ambitious target of attracting 2.3 million tourists in 2024. Part of the appeal of this nation is that the top resorts in Maldives cater to all types of travellers from families and couples to those looking to enjoy water sports or wellness retreats. Such properties like Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives continue to draw international tourists and are helping to cement the country’s position as a top-tier travel destination.
