Constructions of a New Jetty Initiated in Mirissa – A Green Light to the Booming Fisheries Industry

Just last month, the fishing community of the west coast of Sri Lanka received some very positive news; the news of the construction of a new jetty for the Mirissa Harbour. The move as cited by the incumbent Minister of Fisheries was an initiative under the present government’s mandate to improve infrastructure. As such, the new jetty for the Mirissa Harbour would be built at a cost of 103 million and is expected to play a main role in the development of the livelihood of the fisher-community. Since there are many things to do in Mirissa like whale watching and scuba diving, the place is a hive of activity for tourists from around the world. Such visitors can choose from diverse accommodation options ranging from the likes of Sri Sharavi Beach Villas & Spa to more low-budget hotels. With the new jetty coming in, the town will expect more visitors and provide more income-earning opportunities to local communities.
