December Declared as National Bird Watching Month in Sri Lanka

The best time for bird watching enthusiasts to visit Sri Lanka for their observations is towards the latter part of the year. The month of December has been declared as the National Bird Month by the Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka which is the national affiliate of Bird Life International. Sri Lanka, rich with tropical climate and exotic landscape make it an absolute haven and home to more than 400 bird species with close to 23 endemic varieties and 200 migratory birds from India, Siberia, Scandinavia and Western Europe. The paradise island is filled with bird sanctuaries spread across its land that include some of the famous ones like Kumana National Park, Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary, Biodhinagala Sanctuary and Udawatte Kele. Those visiting the Deep South for bird watching including Tissamaharama area can also have a stopover in one of the Tissamaharama hotels such as Kithala Resort.
