Digital Innovations to Tackle Climate Change in the Maldives

Maldives is a small island nation that where fishing and tourism drive the economy forward. Particularly, the tourism industry has been growing rapidly in recent times and the number of visitors to resorts like Kandolhu Maldives has increased. These two factors are certainly a cause for the significant changes in climate in the Maldives. Furthermore, the fact that its a low-lying island subjects the island to undergo faster shore erosion.

While most Maldives resorts have volunteer activities for guests to join in to help preserve the underwater environment and more, there is still a need for accurate recording of data for climate change and coral erosion. The use of AI and automated vehicles and remote sensing is expected to help with this issue. Discussions are underway in order to initiate these digital innovations in the Maldives.
